Female repreentation 3

Text Box: Within this shot Black Widow is portrayed to be a very strong female character, which is seen through her body language as she rides the motorcycle. Her body language consists of her shoulders being arched forward, which makes her appear determined and gives her a brave look. This subverts to the stereotypical view of a female character that would normally be viewed as weak, fragile and more feminine compared to the character of Black Widow. Riding motorcycles in general are stereotypically viewed as a male-based activity, which again emphasises on how she subverts the typical view of a woman being weak and vulnerable, whereas instead she displays herself to be fearless, daring and reckless. Furthermore her costume choice is seen to be black, which connotes a sense of mystery and danger, which adds a darker and curious side to her character. This scene further presents Black Widow to be positioned within the centre of the shot, which creates a sense of importance and dominance towards her character, and likewise makes her the centre of attention to the audience.

This is seen through the emphasis of her dark makeup. Her red lipstick can be seen as seductive because the colour red generally connotes lust, romance and passion. This side to Black Widow’s character conforms to the stereotypical view of female characters in film because they are often sexualised to appeal to the majority of the male-based audience. Her costume choice again differs from the first shot as this time it is now seen to be a creamy white colour, which connotes goodness, innocence and light. This could highlight another side to Black Widow’s personality to be more kind, admirable and charming. This again conforms to the stereotypical aspect of a woman as they are expected to be friendly and gentle. However this shot further shows how Black Widow is holding/drinking a beer bottle, which subverts to a stereotypical female character that would typically be drinking wine because it is seen to be more lady-like. Instead Black Widow drinking beer symbolises her personality to be more masculine because beer is commonly known to be a manly drink.
